Swedish truck maker Scania<\/a> is developing an 18-meter long solar cell-clad trailer that will be able to generate energy from devices along 140m2<\/sup> of surface area on the sides and roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solar array is being conceived for use on plug-in hybrid trucks to reduce fossil fuel consumption. \u201cInitial tests indicate possible fuel savings of 5-10% in Sweden, and twice that amount in sun-rich southern Spain,\u201d said Scania. \u201cIn total, the solar panels are expected, in Sweden, to annually generate 14,000 kWh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research project \u2013 funded by Swedish government innovation agency Vinnova, Volkswagen-owned Scania and Swedish trucking company Ernst Express \u2013 also aims to test how the solar trailers could feed electricity into the grid when truck batteries are fully charged and vehicles parked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swedish thin-film panel maker\u00a0Midsummer<\/a>\u00a0is a partner in the project along with electric vehicle charging company Dalakraft and Sweden\u2019s\u00a0Uppsala University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany\u2019s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and a sister organization are also trying to demonstrate the marketability of PV applications for commercial transport<\/a>. A three-year research project is set to develop a concept to facilitate vehicle-integrated solar modules for electric cars and heavy-duty vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dutch companies\u00a0Lightyear<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0DSM NV<\/a>\u00a0are also aiming to start commercial production of the former\u2019s electric vehicle solar roof. That 5m\u00b2 device consists of a double-curved,\u00a0glass-covered solar panel<\/a>\u00a0backed with maximum power point trackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
