75-year-old street vendor now uses solar power to roast corn in style.
Selvamma, a 75-year-old woman street vendor who has been selling roasted corn outside the Bengaluru Vidhana Soudha (State Legislative Assembly) for 20 years now, has got a new upgrade up her sleeve now. She sells the same roasted corn, but now uses a solar-powered fan to roast the corn.
The recent upgrade has been provided to Selvamma’s cart by SELCO Solar Light Pvt Ltd, a foundation that “seeks to inspire and implement socially, financially and environmentally inclusive solutions by improving access to sustainable energy.”
Just like most other roasted corn vendors in the country, Selvamma also used a manual cane fan and coal to roast corn to grill it until recently, but now things have changed.
Speaking to The News Minute, Selvamma said, “My hand hurts, that’s why they have given this.”
The fan works on lithium-ion battery.
The following video shared by a Twitter user shows Selvamma using the fan to roast corn at her cart.
The use of a solar powered fan to roast corn has resulted in significant decrease in her manual labour and has made the task much more comfortable for her. This has also cut down the time to roast corn to half.
Selvamma’s new solar fan has found her many fans on social media.
